Listening

I'm up at this obscene hour of the morning because I'm listening for something.

On February 1, 2003, a Saturday morning, I was noodling around on the computer, having an IM chat with [info]pkhardy, and listening for two thunderous, window-rattling sonic booms. When the time came and went, and I didn't hear them, I told Pen I thought something was wrong. About two minutes after that, the local space reporter on the television in the background said that NASA had told them to clear the area, and we all knew something was wrong.

So, two and a half years later, I'm listening again. And praying.

ETA: It's been delayed for another couple of hours, due to low-lying clouds. Sleep? Who needs sleep?

ETA: Okay, now they're delaying it until tomorrow morning. I'm going back to bed. Further bulletins as events warrant.

I've just heard that the landing's been delayed for another couple of hours.

Fingers crossed....

Back to bed then?

And hope the weather's better tomorrow.

You sound like me, in 1988 (or was it 89?) during the first liftoff after the Challenger disaster. I remember being at work; someone had brought in a small TV and we were all gathered around, watching. Everybody cheered when it lifted, but I didn't, waiting for those fateful words... "Go to throttle up." I almost cried once I heard them.
